Sharjah motorists, delivery riders, and heavy vehicle drivers must take note of a major traffic update. The General Command of Sharjah Police, in coordination with the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has announced new mandatory lane allocations for motorcycles, buses, and trucks.
The new rules will be strictly enforced starting from November 1, 2025.
This move is part of a major emirate-wide initiative to boost road safety, ease traffic congestion, and organize the flow of different types of vehicles on major and secondary roads.

The New Lane Rules Explained
Effective November 1 2025, all motorists must adhere to the following lane discipline:
For Heavy Vehicles and Buses:
- Trucks and buses must exclusively use the far-right lane on all multi-lane roads.
For Motorcycles (Including Delivery Bikes):
The new rules essentially ban motorcycles from using the far-left (fast) lane on any road with three or more lanes. The specific rules are:
- On 4-lane roads: Motorcycles are permitted to use only the third and fourth lanes (the two right-most lanes).
- On 3-lane roads: Motorcycles are permitted to use the middle or right lanes only.
- On 2-lane roads: Motorcycles are permitted to use the right lane only.
This regulation follows similar safety measures recently announced in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, aimed at protecting riders and reducing accidents associated with speed differences in fast lanes.
Fines and Strict Enforcement
Sharjah Police have confirmed that compliance will not be optional. The new rules will be enforced 24/7 through:
- Smart radars
- Advanced traffic camera systems
- Increased traffic patrols
Violators will face significant penalties as per the Federal Traffic Law. The fines are different for heavy vehicles and other motorists.
- For Heavy Vehicles: Drivers who fail to comply with the mandatory far-right lane (Article 8) will face a severe penalty of:
- Dh 1,500 fine
- 12 black points
- For Motorcycles & Other Vehicles: Drivers who fail to comply with the new traffic signs and lane instructions (Article 70) will face a:
- Dh 500 fine
Sharjah Police have urged all road users to follow the new regulations and respect the designated lanes for each vehicle category. The authority stressed that this initiative is a critical part of its commitment to improving traffic safety and ensuring efficient mobility for all residents.
