UAE National Day 2025: Long Weekend Alert – December Could Give You 5 Days Off

Good news is coming for anyone living in the UAE. December 2nd marks the country’s 54th National Day, and there’s talk about turning this into the longest weekend break of the year.

Right now, December 2nd and 3rd are confirmed public holidays. But government discussions are happening about adding December 1st to the mix. That would mean five straight days off – December 1st through 5th.

Nothing’s set in stone yet with that extra day. The final call should come by late November.

Where This Year’s Main Event Will Be

Nobody’s saying where the big ceremony will happen this year. Last time around, they held it at Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain. Massive event with all the UAE rulers attending.

Word is they’re looking at places that tell the story of the last 54 years. Could be anywhere from Dubai’s Museum of the Future area to Abu Dhabi’s Founder’s Memorial. Maybe even back to Sharjah’s cultural spots.

Eisa Alsubousi runs strategic affairs for the National Day planning. He mentioned they want a location that shows “both heritage and future vision.” That could be anywhere, honestly.

The ceremony itself happens Tuesday, December 2nd. Doesn’t matter where they pick – these events always draw huge crowds once people know the location.

Dubai’s Fireworks Plan Takes Shape

Dubai already started mapping out where fireworks will happen December 2nd evening. Some usual suspects, plus a few new spots:

The regulars:

  • Burj Khalifa area at 8:30 PM
  • Festival City Mall waterfront at 9:00 PM
  • Global Village at 9:30 PM
  • Al Seef heritage area at 8:45 PM

New this year:

  • Expo City Dubai
  • Dubai Hills Mall outside area
  • JBR Beach Walk

Each spot gets its own theme. Downtown focuses on tech and progress. Al Seef goes traditional. Global Village mixes everything together.

Traffic gets diverted starting 4 PM around these areas. Metro runs late until 2 AM with extra trains every few minutes when things get busy.

Abu Dhabi Goes Big on Culture

The capital decided to make this a three-day thing across multiple spots.

Corniche Beach handles the main fireworks Tuesday night. But Wednesday’s where things get interesting – Umm Al Emarat Park turns into a full cultural experience. Traditional dancing, craft demos, food stalls. More hands-on than just watching from a distance.

Sarah Al Amiri coordinates cultural events there. She said they want people “understanding culture through participation, not just watching.”

Etihad Arena booked big regional artists for concerts. Tickets start November 15th at AED 75 for basic admission.

What Other Emirates Are Doing

Sharjah’s trying something different at Al Majaz Waterfront. They’re having older Emiratis share stories from when the country unified in 1971. Happens all weekend at the Islamic Arts Museum and Heritage Area. They provide English translation.

Ras Al Khaimah uses those mountains for advantage. Jebel Jais hosts sunrise flag ceremonies December 2nd and 3rd. Takes about 30 minutes to drive up there, but you get amazing views and way fewer people.

Fujairah keeps it simple – beach celebrations and free museum entry the whole holiday period.

Shopping Starts Early This Year

Big stores already launched National Day sales. Carrefour, Lulu, Spinneys are doing 25-54% off electronics, home stuff, groceries through December 5th.

Malls extend hours during the celebration:

  • December 1st-3rd: 10 AM to midnight
  • December 4th-5th: 10 AM to 11 PM

Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates expect crazy crowds. They hired extra security and cleaning crews.

Online delivery gets messy during this time. Noon, Amazon, Talabat are already warning about delays. Better order essentials by November 30th if you want them December 1st.

School Schedule Changes Coming

Private schools are waiting for that final government decision about the extended weekend. Most international schools already planned for December 1st being off, just in case.

Mark Stevens runs Dubai International Academy. “We’re ready either way,” he said. “If Monday becomes official, we just extend the December break.”

Universities already confirmed – no classes through December 5th regardless.

Perfect Weather Expected

December 2nd forecast looks ideal. Morning starts around 18°C, afternoons hit 24°C. Evening celebrations stay comfortable at 20-22°C with light breeze.

No rain expected the whole five-day period. Makes outdoor stuff way more appealing.

Might get morning fog December 2nd and 3rd, but it clears by 9 AM. Won’t mess with evening celebrations.

Getting Around During Celebrations

Dubai RTA made special schedules for National Day. Metro starts an hour early (4 AM) on celebration days. Buses add extra trips around big venues.

Some RTA parking becomes free December 2nd-3rd. But spots near celebrations still cost extra.

Abu Dhabi offers free bus rides between major celebration locations. Runs every 15 minutes from 4 PM to midnight.

Uber and Careem will surge price during busy hours (7-11 PM). Book before 6 PM or after midnight for normal rates.

Restaurant Scene Getting Slammed

High-end places in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are almost booked solid for December 2nd evening. Burj Al Arab, Atlantis, Four Seasons – completely full.

Mid-range restaurants still have spots, especially for lunch celebrations. Lots of places are making special National Day menus mixing traditional Emirati food with international dishes.

Food trucks get special permits near celebration venues. Good budget option instead of hotel dining.

Beyond Just Fireworks

Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding runs special National Day explanation sessions. December 1st-5th, 90 minutes each. English sessions at 10 AM and 2 PM daily.

Dubai Opera booked the UAE Philharmonic Orchestra for December 3rd. Traditional Emirati music mixed with classical pieces.

Heritage villages extend hours and add demonstrations. Try traditional crafts, sample authentic food, watch falconry displays.

When We’ll Know for Sure

Government promises final weekend decision by November 25th. That announcement will say whether December 1st becomes official.

Private companies can give that extra day even if government doesn’t make it official. Many international firms already said they’ll close December 1st if workers want it.

Banks and government offices definitely close December 2nd-3rd. Extended closure depends on that final call.

Safe bet is planning for at least December 2nd-3rd off, with possible bonus days coming.

Bottom Line

This 54th National Day could be the most memorable yet. Whether it’s four days, five days, or just the confirmed two – celebrations show how far the UAE has come since 1971.

The country went from seven separate territories to a global player in just over 50 years. That’s worth celebrating, however long the weekend ends up being.
