
In a humanitarian gesture marking the start of Ramadan, the UAE President has ordered the release of 1,440 inmates from correctional institutions across the country. The move was announced on Tuesday and comes as the nation prepares to welcome the holy month.
According to the reports, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directed authorities to free the inmates and pledged to settle the financial obligations imposed as part of their sentences.

Financial dues to be covered
The Presidential gesture includes the payment of fines and financial penalties linked to the inmates’ cases. Officials said this step aims to ease the burden on families and support the individuals’ return to society during Ramadan.
Ramadan pardons across emirates
Separate directives were also issued by Rulers across the UAE in line with the occasion.
In Sharjah, Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi ordered the release of 738 inmates from the emirate’s punitive and correctional establishments.
In Ajman, Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi approved the pardon of 134 prisoners. Meanwhile, in Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi ordered the release of 407 prisoners and pledged to settle their financial liabilities.
Authorities in the respective emirates are coordinating procedures to complete the releases in time for Ramadan.
