The UAE has rolled out 103 self-service kiosks to streamline the Tourist VAT refund process, officials confirmed. The move aims to cut queues, speed up claims and give visitors more places to reclaim VAT before they leave.

The initiative is led by the Federal Tax Authority in partnership with Planet Tax Free, and links thousands of retailers into a single digital refund system. Travellers and retailers alike say the change feels practical and overdue.

Nationwide expansion of self-service tax refund facilities

The kiosk count has risen to 103 from last year’s total, extending the UAE self-service tax refund footprint beyond terminals and into urban retail locations. The wider roll-out means tourists can now start or complete refund steps at malls, hotels and other departure points, not just at airports.

Officials report nearly 19,000 stores are connected to the scheme. From small boutiques to larger chains, more outlets are offering tax-free invoices that feed into the digital platform.

Major travel hubs now host the updated machines. VAT refund kiosks at UAE airports — including dedicated units at Dubai International (DXB) and Zayed International — let passengers validate purchases ahead of check-in or at departure gates.

Airport staff note the kiosks help ease pressure during busy periods. For many travellers, being able to complete the refund steps before lining up at immigration is a relief.

Wider placement across malls and hotels

The scheme’s spread into shopping centres and select hotels offers visitors flexibility. Tourists can scan or register invoices while still sightseeing or shopping, rather than rushing through the airport. Retail staff say this reduces last-minute headaches and improves the customer experience.

This shift also benefits retailers. With easier refunds, stores hope to attract higher-spend visitors who prefer seamless exits.

Inclusion of land and sea exit points

The network covers more than air travel. Land border tax refund UAE points, and sea port VAT refund kiosks are now part of the system, ensuring tourists leaving by road or boat get the same digital convenience.

Border officials confirm the setups match airport procedures, keeping a consistent standard for validation and payout.

Digital features and operational benefits

The FTA has emphasised user convenience in rolling out multilingual interfaces and mobile integration via Planet Tax Free’s platform. The system supports on-the-spot validation and quicker reimbursements, while maintaining audit standards.

The expanded footprint is part of a broader push to digitise government services and bolster the retail sector’s appeal to international shoppers.
