Dubai has been named the world’s cleanest city for the sixth straight year after recording a 100 per cent satisfaction score in the city-cleanliness indicator of the Global Power City Index. The result, published in the latest GPCI findings, reflects integrated sanitation operations, large-scale waste infrastructure and community engagement across the emirate.

The Global Power City Index — produced by the Institute for Urban Strategies at Japan’s Mori Memorial Foundation — ranks major cities across six functions, using more than 70 international indicators. Dubai topped the city cleanliness measure within the Environment pillar, receiving a full 100 per cent satisfaction rating in the latest index release. The GPCI’s methodology and city-level indicators are set out in its published summary and yearbook.

Municipal operations

Dubai Municipality operates an integrated, round-the-clock cleanliness system that the Government Media Office says is supported by a modern fleet of 785 specialised vehicles and purpose-built machines, more than 23,300 waste-storage and collection units, and a workforce made up of 2,876 sanitation engineers alongside 280 supervisory and inspection staff. The operational network covers roughly 2,400 kilometres of main roads and highways, 1,419 kilometres of investment zones and 33.4 kilometres of water canals, in addition to markets, beaches, residential communities, industrial areas and desert zones.

Waste strategy and projects

Municipal statements link the ranking to long-term waste-management policies under the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2041, which targets reduced waste at source and diversion of 100 per cent of waste from landfills. The Municipality manages the Warsan Waste-to-Energy Centre — cited as the largest facility of its kind globally — and has rolled out smart community recycling centres plus digital platforms that enable real-time monitoring through the Clean City Index system. Community programmes such as Circle Dubai and engagement initiatives including the ‘One Hour with a Sanitation Engineer’ campaign are highlighted as part of the city’s circular-economy push.

Statements and partnerships

His Excellency Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita said the emirate’s continued top ranking “reflects a clear vision supported by sustained institutional efforts and strong partnership between government entities, the private sector, and the community.” Dubai Government Media Office and municipal releases emphasised that cleanliness has become an established urban culture in the city, contributing directly to quality of life for individuals and families. Collaborative frameworks with private partners are cited as strengthening residential waste collection, transport and recycling services.
